Marbach Group: Secure corporate management in fast-moving markets

Dennis Benz
Head of Finance & Controlling, Marbach Group

We place great value on a partner who guides us rather than merely implementing our requests without question. This works extremely well with ORAYLIS. The collaboration on the development of our new sales reporting has always been constructive and goal-oriented.

We had full transparency at all times and quickly and efficiently achieved the desired results. That’s why we will continue our journey toward becoming a data-driven company together with our partner.

For the Marbach Group from Heilbronn, 2023 is a special year: the family-owned company celebrates its 100th anniversary. What started as a three-person operation founded by Karl Marbach Senior has grown into a market and innovation leader in the construction of tools and stamping dies for packaging. Today, approximately 1,600 employees work at more than 20 locations worldwide. Marbach tools shape a wide variety of product packaging in industries such as pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and food. A new data platform and reporting solution have now laid the foundation for the company’s transformation into a data-driven organization.

Future-Proofing in a Fast-Moving Business

To continue Marbach’s impeccable success story, executives must navigate the company safely through an increasingly dynamic market environment. “Most of our customers rely on rapid assortment changes,” explains Dennis Benz. “Delivery times of three to four days are sometimes expected for a tool, and nearly every tool is custom-made. And the pace is accelerating further.” Consequently, Dennis Benz must respond to business questions as quickly as possible: “When I receive a call from sales colleagues or management, I need immediate, reliable figures. No one wants to wait for a callback.”

A Cognos data warehouse served the company well for more than ten years. “Our old BI system was already extensive for the company’s size and was well used by our employees. But we also had to think about the future. We wanted to leverage new possibilities in data visualization and mobile reporting, as well as cross-functional data models with new KPIs.” The switch to an IFS ERP system was the perfect opportunity to modernize reporting with Microsoft Power BI and advance the company’s digitalization.

Initial Setback

The first attempt with the new analysis and visualization tool failed. “It wasn’t Power BI itself—it was a technical setup issue,” says Dennis Benz. “We moved too quickly into in-house development and over-engineered the report layouts. The solution was slow, confusing, and unusable for end users.”

Microsoft recommended bringing ORAYLIS on board. The new partner impressed with methods that were new to Marbach: “As part of a Data Strategy Assessment, we created an initial dataset for sales and built a prototype in Power BI with prioritized dimensions and facts. I had never seen anything like this in previous data projects. At first I was skeptical, but the results quickly convinced me. Consistently linked dimensions and facts provided new insights immediately.”

Data Platform and Reporting Revamped

The first step was rebuilding the data foundation. Aligning with the ERP modernization, a cloud approach was chosen—a Data Lakehouse in Microsoft Azure. “We migrated all relevant data from Cognos to this platform and made it available,” explains Raphael Bruns, Project Manager at ORAYLIS. “This includes various sales data, revenue reports, contribution margins, sales volumes, and individual P&L entries—particularly valuable for month-end closing. The right solution architecture combined with highly scalable Azure services enables high-performance delivery for diverse reporting scenarios in Power BI.”

Simultaneously, the team redesigned Marbach Group’s extensive reporting landscape, this time focusing on balance: “Based on past experiences, we had to find the optimal balance between familiar and new elements,” says Raphael Bruns. “We couldn’t overwhelm users, or we’d lose them. Together, we developed a modern reporting concept aligned with current information design standards.”

Reporting with Multiple Benefits

The new reporting quickly regained user trust, offering clarity and ease of use: “Visualizations provide high value to our users,” emphasizes Dennis Benz. “Many employees can now perform independent analyses for the first time. We can delve deeper into the data and derive meaningful business insights. Previously, KPIs could only be analyzed individually; now, we have a fully linked data model connecting multiple dimensions.”

For Dennis Benz and his department, user independence is key. “I have only three controllers for the entire company. So, alongside high system performance, it’s crucial that users can work with the data independently within defined standards, without coming to us for every question. This allows a small team to manage all tasks effectively.”

The informational content of reports has also increased, integrating new KPIs. For example, end-of-month order backlogs are now immediately visible, enabling proper revenue allocation. Previously, special analyses and IT intervention were needed. Sales can now also see order statuses directly, instantly identifying late deliveries, eliminating the need for previous labor-intensive reports.

Well-Prepared for the Digital Future

Marbach’s product range is also becoming increasingly digitised. Customers can monitor and optimise their die-cutting processes with the help of production data and corresponding key figures. (Marbach Group)

The new sales reporting is just the beginning. The cloud platform allows diverse data to be leveraged for business purposes. “We have a full agenda,” confirms Dennis Benz. “Finance reporting has been successfully implemented. Next is HR reporting, followed by production. This will be particularly exciting, with huge data volumes containing extensive optimization potential. Customers will benefit directly through improved transparency of order status and faster delivery times.”

That these plans will be realized with ORAYLIS is unquestioned: “We value a partner who guides us rather than just executing our requests blindly. ORAYLIS does this extremely well. From conception to implementation, the collaboration is always constructive and goal-oriented. We have full transparency at all times and achieve the desired results quickly and efficiently. That’s why we will continue our journey to becoming a data-driven company together with our partner.”

DEHN strengthens customer relationships through data

Tim Koesler
Data Engineer, DEHN SE

We were aware that many business potentials still lay dormant in our data. Together with ORAYLIS, we moved to the cloud and gradually migrated our existing data solution into a Modern Data Warehouse.

Even today, we see improvements in process and data quality and are already faster and more efficient in implementing data-driven requirements. In the medium term, we aim to implement real-time monitoring of our machine data to continuously optimize production processes and capacity planning.

  • Project goal: Centralization of all data on a cloud platform, company-wide reporting, real-time analysis of machine data
  • Technologies: Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Data Lake, Power BI, Theobald XTract Universal

DEHN SE is a textbook example of a hidden champion—family-owned since 1910, operating in a niche market, highly specialized, and solution-oriented. The company’s products are used worldwide in sectors such as plant and telecommunications engineering, process industries, and photovoltaic and wind power systems. With solutions for lightning, surge, and occupational safety, more than 2,300 DEHN employees globally ensure the protection of people, buildings, equipment, and systems of all kinds.

Customer and Market Orientation as a Foundation for Success

The company’s lasting success is built on a strong customer and market focus, which is now being further enhanced through targeted data use. “We knew there were still many business potentials in our data,” says Tim Koesler. “However, there was no central point in the company to correlate the various sources. We used multiple solutions to analyze our data, but unified, cross-departmental KPIs with future-ready analytics are crucial for corporate management—and ultimately for customer satisfaction.”

Consequently, management decided to build an entirely new data platform. Moving to the cloud was a logical step: “High scalability and easy connection of new data sources were important. We wanted not only a foundation for unified, high-performance reporting across all subsidiaries but also the potential to implement AI and real-time analytics use cases in the future.”

Data Strategy Assessment as Project Kickoff

The first task was to find a partner with sufficient expertise to define a functioning cloud architecture from scratch. “There was an almost endless task list that needed to be converted into a goal-oriented approach,” explains Tim Koesler. After evaluating various providers, ORAYLIS was selected, with a Data Strategy Assessment providing the foundation for the right data strategy.

The first step was a kick-off meeting, followed by strategy development. Based on DEHN’s requirements, the target architecture was defined, technical challenges and potential use cases were clarified, and a concrete cost and resource estimate for the technical infrastructure and reporting was prepared. “I can only recommend this approach to any company with similar projects,” says Tim Koesler.

Modern Data Warehouse as Technological Foundation

The target architecture is a Modern Data Warehouse (MDWH) in the Microsoft Azure Cloud, aligning with DEHN’s existing Microsoft-based systems. “The existing components can be easily migrated into our proven cloud architecture,” explains Martin van Husen, Senior Consultant and Technical Project Manager at ORAYLIS. “The core element is Azure Synapse Analytics, which handles data integration, data warehousing, and big data analytics. On this foundation, we can tailor the new solution to DEHN’s needs and scale it flexibly.”

Martin van Husen

Future scalability is a major advantage. The MDWH can be easily extended with additional Azure Cloud services as new business requirements arise. New data sources can also be integrated seamlessly. Standard connectors are available for third-party technologies such as SAP databases. “Consequently, the effort for deployment is minimal. Only the migration of data load processes requires significant work; everything else runs mostly automatically.”

The MDWH concept also introduces significant changes for the frontend. The old QlikView landscape is largely replaced by Power BI as the modern standard tool for data analysis. The goal is to expand user access, allowing as many employees as possible to work with data. Power BI integrates directly with the familiar Office 365 interface, enabling employees to quickly gain a comprehensive view of data and analyses worldwide. Every department at DEHN benefits from this, as do customers.

Data-Driven Decisions Across the Organization

The company-wide analytics platform has had a positive impact on business operations. It provides a reliable, integrated data foundation that enables DEHN to make data-driven decisions at all levels and in all areas, strengthening customer relationships. “Even now, we are faster and more efficient in implementing data-driven requirements. In the medium term, DEHN aims to implement real-time monitoring of machine data to continuously optimize production processes and capacity planning,” concludes Tim Koesler.

Dr. Pfleger generates new business value from SAP data

Sebastian Rauh
Head of IT, Dr. Pfleger GmbH

We knew that connecting our SAP data with other sources could open up entirely new opportunities for our business. However, we lacked a platform that would provide all our data in a centralized way. Microsoft’s recommendation to involve ORAYLIS was extremely helpful.

Together with our new partner, we quickly implemented a Modern Data Warehouse that seamlessly integrates our SAP sources. Now, anyone in the company can independently link diverse data and derive new insights. Our next steps with ORAYLIS will be to implement various data analysis and forecasting scenarios with automated recommendations for action.

Dr. Pfleger Arzneimittel GmbH has always been committed to innovation as well as promoting people’s health and quality of life. Consequently, digitalization ranks high on the Bavarian pharmaceutical manufacturer’s agenda. “We want to fully unlock the potential of our data for our business. Everyone in the company should be able to perform analyses using harmonized data from various sources,” says Sebastian Rauh, Head of IT at Dr. Pfleger. “We also want to leverage Artificial Intelligence in the future to gain new insights and create more effective, transparent business processes.”

Data Was Trapped in Silos

The prerequisites for this had to be created first. Dr. Pfleger faced challenges similar to many companies: “We were working with different data silos and reporting tools. For example, our SAP data was reported in isolation from other sources using Qlik Sense. Additional systems were used to create reports for various audiences.” Decision-makers therefore lacked not only universally applicable KPIs for business management but also the ability to perform ad-hoc analyses efficiently.

“This was a significant loss, especially for our SAP data, as it covers critical areas of our value chain. We knew that connecting it with other sources could unlock entirely new business opportunities. However, we were unsure how to approach this project. We faced a mountain of solutions and vendors—the question was, what was the best fit to develop us into a Data Driven Company?”

Data Strategy Provides Clarity

Dr. Pfleger turned to Microsoft during their search. “Microsoft recommended ORAYLIS as a partner, and from that point, things gained momentum.” ORAYLIS started with a Data Strategy Assessment involving all project participants. In the workshop, participants developed the appropriate approach for the data-driven transformation of the business.

“We evaluated Dr. Pfleger’s requirements and objectives and compared them with the current situation,” explains Jens Kröhnert, Principal Solution Architect at ORAYLIS and the creator of this workshop format. “This quickly clarified the right technical solution, the business benefits, and the associated costs.” All results were documented in a management-ready strategy document, which also included an initial flagship project and next steps.

SAP Daten, Jens Kröhnert, ORAYLIS GmbH

Principal Solution Architect Jens developed the data strategy for the digitalization project with Dr. Pfleger.

MDWH as Technological Foundation

The technological foundation for the first project and future requirements is a Modern Data Warehouse (MDWH) implemented in collaboration with Microsoft Azure Cloud services. “The cloud approach offers cost advantages since all services are used and paid for on demand,” says Jens Kröhnert. “Most importantly, storage and compute power can be scaled independently to any desired level.” This enables a data lake, which serves as the core element of the digital platform, consolidating and providing all structured and unstructured data—including SAP sources—automatically as needed.

SAP Data Seamlessly Integrated

SAP integration is implemented via a connector from Theobald Software. “Our connector communicates directly through the SAP RFC interface, ensuring seamless integration and daily data availability,” explains Niklas Kohlenberg, Sales & Partner Manager at Theobald Software. “Installation and setup are very straightforward. We provide standardized access to the SAP environment, minimizing development and later maintenance work.” Jens Kröhnert from ORAYLIS confirms: “We use these connectors in most of our projects. At Dr. Pfleger, the deployment was straightforward without extensive onboarding or Theobald service support. It’s very easy to handle.”

Power BI Enables New Insights

Dr. Pfleger, Labormaschine, Mitarbeiter

The new reporting tool is also seamlessly integrated. Following Microsoft’s approach, Qlik Sense is being replaced by Power BI. Microsoft’s analysis service integrates smoothly into the overall solution, allowing every potential user in the company to access data through a unified interface, recombine it, and analyze it using advanced features. At the same time, the company saves on licensing costs.

“All of our departments are excited to link diverse data sources and generate new business value,” says Sebastian Rauh. Looking ahead, he adds: “In the next steps, we want to implement various forecasting scenarios and automated recommendations for action. The MDWH has already provided the technical foundation, so we are looking forward to continued collaboration with the ORAYLIS team.”

Isabellenhütte embarks on digital future with data strategy assessment

Joachim Heilig
Head of Inhouse Consulting, Isabellenhütte Heusler GmbH & Co. KG

Through ORAYLIS’ Data Strategy Assessment, we were able to pinpoint our requirements for a new BI solution at breathtaking speed. Together, we developed a vision that went far beyond our initial ideas: with a Modern Data Warehouse in the Microsoft Azure Cloud, we are now creating a future-proof analytics platform that not only fully meets our current needs but also positions us perfectly for our journey toward Industry 4.0.

The follow-up project to further expand our new platform is already planned—naturally again with ORAYLIS.

At a glance

  • Customer: Isabellenhütte Heusler GmbH & Co. KG
  • Industry: Manufacturing / Precision Measurement Technology and Power Resistors
  • Project Goal: Automated reporting and ad-hoc analyses across the entire company, with a future focus on Industry 4.0
  • Technologies: Azure Synapse Analytics, Data Lake Storage, Power BI

Isabellenhütte is considered the oldest industrial company in Hesse. Now in its eighth generation, the former copper smelter has remained in family hands. One key to its longevity: alongside tradition, innovation has always been nurtured. Today, Isabellenhütte is a global technology leader in precision measurement technology and power resistors. Every day, vast amounts of data are generated, which could provide significant business advantages — if processed and made available in a targeted manner.

However, for a long time, an outdated business intelligence (BI) landscape stood in the way: “We were still working with a system based on IBM Cognos,” explains Joachim Heilig, Head of Inhouse Consulting at Isabellenhütte. “It dated back to 2009 — before our SAP implementation — and was no longer supported.” Modern reporting for fast, fact-based decision-making was no longer feasible. “A reliable data foundation and automated, cross-departmental KPIs were missing. We wanted to reduce manual effort and initially provide flexible self-service analyses for departments such as Controlling and Sales. In the long term, this should be extended to the entire company. Industry 4.0 and Machine Learning were also on our near-future agenda.”

Data Strategy Assessment Provides Orientation

However, finding the right technology and implementation partner proved challenging. “There are so many players on the market. We reviewed numerous solutions and providers,” says Joachim Heilig. “Ultimately, Microsoft convinced us — not least through the ORAYLIS Data Strategy Assessment.”

For the Isabellenhütte team, the approach of conducting a detailed strategy workshop already during the selection phase was new. “Most competitors limit themselves to mere tool presentations. We also had some doubts about starting such a comprehensive project in a fully virtual workshop due to the pandemic.”

These concerns quickly disappeared. “Daniel Esser and Andreas Siemes from ORAYLIS immediately convinced us with their professionalism and approachable, down-to-earth manner. Under their guidance and through the structured workshop methodology, we were able to formulate and continuously refine our requirements at breathtaking speed — including analyzing pains & gains and stakeholder perspectives.”

New Visions for Digital Transformation

The Data Strategy Assessment identified and organized the key topics essential for project success. This resulted in a multi-year vision that far exceeded the original ideas and expectations: “During the workshop, it became increasingly clear that it made no sense to merely replace our old BI tool. Instead, we are now implementing a future-proof Modern Data Warehouse in the Azure Cloud — a company-wide analytics platform seamlessly integrated into our IT ecosystem with Power BI as the frontend.”

As a result, Isabellenhütte can fully meet its current requirements for company-wide data analysis. The highly scalable and tightly integrated Azure services also allow the digital platform to be flexibly extended in the future for new use cases, such as Data Science and Industry 4.0. At the same time, the Data Strategy Assessment provided all participants with a clear view of the next steps: “During the workshop, we already defined an initial lighthouse project, connecting our SAP sources to the new platform and implementing sales reporting in Power BI. The efforts were transparently estimated in a joint exercise, and the resulting decision document immediately convinced our management.”

Rapid Path to First Successes

Data Strategy Assessment: Isabellenhütte macht Produktionsdaten nutzbar.

In the follow-up project, additional data sources, such as production and process data, will be utilized. (Isabellenhütte)

Thanks to the precise elaboration of all workshop contents, the first components of sales reporting were successfully launched in record time. The offering has since been continuously expanded by the key-user team. Decision-makers at different levels now automatically receive up-to-date information based on uniform data and KPIs. If necessary, any employee can perform deeper analyses and gain additional insights.

But this is only the beginning, as Joachim Heilig confirms: “We are thrilled with the initial successes and can unreservedly recommend ORAYLIS. Despite the entirely virtual project execution, the team collaboration was excellent from the start, almost like a friendship. We experienced our consultants as a well-coordinated team. The atmosphere was always open, and the presentation of efforts was very transparent. Therefore, the follow-up project to further expand our Modern Data Warehouse is already planned — of course, again with ORAYLIS.”

How malzers boosts sales and reduces return rates with data

Klaus-Jürgen Mader
Chief Financial Officer, Malzers Backstube GmbH & Co. KG

Our managers previously had access to current sales data only with a significant delay. Ad-hoc analyses were out of the question. Together with ORAYLIS, we consolidated and made usable our numerous datasets from different systems, enabling us to finally manage our store operations efficiently.

As a result, we were able not only to reduce our return rates and optimize our product range, but also to develop an automated fraud detection system that reliably identifies irregularities. We owe these achievements to the close and trusted collaboration with ORAYLIS. This is why we are now taking the next step into the cloud together with our partner.

At a glance

  • Customer: Malzers Backstube GmbH & Co. KG
  • Industry: Retail / Industrial Bakery
  • Project Goal: Forecasting production volumes, managing day-to-day operations using current sales data, ad-hoc analyses
  • Technologies: SQL Server, Power BI, Azure Cloud (planned)

Malzers Backstube is a true institution in and around the Ruhr area. For 120 years, the Gelsenkirchen-based bakery chain has been serving its customers with fresh baked goods, from rolls to cakes. Today, the company offers its products at over 150 locations, generating massive amounts of data daily. Malzers’ retail business is “high-frequency,” meaning many transactions are completed in a short period with relatively small amounts. Consequently, the volume of receipts and resulting transaction data is extensive.

However, for a long time, the company was unable to fully leverage this treasure trove of data. “All our data resided in different systems,” explains Klaus-Jürgen Mader, CFO at Malzers. “It required an enormous amount of manual effort to prepare the data. As a result, our managers could access reports only with significant delays. Detailed ad-hoc analyses were out of the question. And because of the missing data foundation, there were no uniform KPIs. In many areas, store management was based on gut feeling, where data could have enabled informed decisions.”

Starting with a “Seemingly Impossible” Task

Everyone at Malzers was aware of the massive business and growth potential in the unused data. Yet starting a new data solution initially seemed daunting: “It felt like an impossible task,” says Klaus-Jürgen Mader. “We had no idea how to reconcile the different expectations and goals of the various people and departments.”

This led to a collaboration with ORAYLIS. “With the support of the ORAYLIS experts, we were able to build the necessary know-how about the technical components and the right project approach.” During the development phase, the Malzers team also learned to appreciate the advantages of agile methods. “This meant we didn’t have to write endless requirements documents, which are often only partially completed and consume a lot of capital. At the same time, we could quickly respond to developments and continuously adjust.”

The new data solution enables Malzers to predict the required production volumes for the following day much more accurately. (Malzers Bakery)

New Data Platform Improves Internal Processes

The result of the collaboration is a business intelligence platform based on Microsoft technologies that consolidates the various data silos. The central data platform automatically provides standardized reports for different business areas such as store management, controlling, production, and executive management. Manual efforts for data collection and preparation are reduced to a minimum. What used to take days or weeks is now available at the push of a button as a clearly structured decision support tool. Data is updated almost in real-time, allowing day-to-day operations to be managed without significant delays.

Additionally, all departments now have access to the data. For individual analyses, different user groups have the appropriate tools, such as Power BI or Excel. This allows all employees to perform ad-hoc analyses at any time, answering complex questions and generating new insights.

Multiple Benefits for Business and Customers

The extensive improvements in data analysis also have direct business impacts. “Ultimately, we decide each day, based on current events, what quantities to produce for the next day,” explains Klaus-Jürgen Mader. “Thanks to our new solution, these forecasts are much more reliable—because they are data- and fact-based. We can also detect unexpected shortages or surpluses during the day and respond quickly, for example by reallocating or restocking goods.” This ensures that sales potential is fully exploited and revenue is increased. At the same time, return rates were reduced and the product range optimized.

But that’s not all: “Naturally, our customers are also more satisfied and remain loyal longer, as they can choose from the full range of fresh goods at any time of the day.” Additionally, an automated fraud detection system reliably identifies irregularities by combining transaction data with scheduling plans. “All of these results are thanks to the close and trusted collaboration with ORAYLIS. This is why we are now taking the next step into the cloud together with our partner.”

Elkamet improves production processes with data

Julia Günther
Developer, Elkamet Kunststofftechnik GmbH

We lacked a unified solution to effectively analyze our extensive production data. Together with ORAYLIS, we quickly built a comprehensive analytics platform in the Azure Cloud that enables all employees to do exactly that.

We can now manage and optimize our production processes using daily data. Our managers also have access to standardized analyses, allowing them to make important decisions quickly and reliably. We are therefore pleased to have found a competent partner in ORAYLIS, who understands our requirements and delivers suitable solutions.

At a glance

  • Customer: Elkamet Kunststofftechnik GmbH
  • Industry: Manufacturing / Plastic Components for Vehicles and Lighting
  • Project Goal: Daily production reporting, ad-hoc analysis of production data, self-service report creation
  • Technologies: Azure Synapse Analytics, Power BI

Elkamet GmbH has been developing and producing high-quality plastic components for the automotive and lighting industries since 1955. The family-owned company, headquartered in Biedenkopf, Hesse, currently employs more than 1,200 people across six locations. The production processes are based on state-of-the-art technologies, generating large amounts of data—valuable raw material that, for a long time, provided little business benefit. “We had collected our extensive production data in an Abas ERP system,” explains Julia Günther, Developer at Elkamet. “However, we lacked the tools to process, analyze, and provide this data in a centralized reporting system.”

As a result, managers had little fact-based insight to optimize production processes. Production staff could not quickly get an overview of their current situation, and advanced analyses of production data were out of the question. “At that time, we already knew a modern business intelligence system would help,” says Julia Günther. “The full range of possibilities only became clear through our partnership with ORAYLIS.”

Modern Cloud Platform Creates Future Security

Das Bild zeigt Matthias Petig, der im Text zitiert wird.

Matthias Petig, Senior Consultant bei ORAYLIS.

Together with ORAYLIS, Elkamet built a complete Modern Data Warehouse (MDWH) in the Azure Cloud in a short period. “We migrated all relevant data from the ERP system using Azure Synapse Analytics and made it available for the desired use cases. The data is updated several times a day,” explains Matthias Petig, Technical Project Manager at ORAYLIS. “Reporting and self-service analyses are then carried out via Power BI.” Reports are embedded directly into the employees’ work interfaces. “Users don’t need to log in or navigate extensively to access the data. Most importantly, there are no licensing costs for the many machine workstations. The embedded solution covers everything, including updates and maintenance.”

Another advantage of the cloud approach is that storage and computing resources can be scaled independently to any desired level. Elkamet can also easily integrate new applications in the future, such as AI use cases. “This is simple because all Azure services work seamlessly together. Technologically, Elkamet is very well positioned for the future,” adds Matthias Petig.

Rapid Development Through Agile Methods

Agile methods also contributed significantly to the fast development pace. “Through the ORAYLIS team, we learned and appreciated agile working methods,” says Julia Günther. “We worked in two-week sprint cycles. After each sprint, new features were presented to the departments and evaluated as a team.” Project progress was visible to all stakeholders, creating transparency and acceptance. “This approach also allowed us to respond more flexibly to departmental change requests, leading to better, more practical results. Agile methods are now firmly established at Elkamet.”

Julia Günther is very satisfied with the collaboration with ORAYLIS: “It was true teamwork on equal footing, based on mutual trust. Through intensive training and support from ORAYLIS, we were able to develop solution components independently at an early stage. This enables us today to maintain and further develop our MDWH infrastructure independently.”

Solution Increases Machine Efficiency and Reduces Production Costs

Marcus Schneider, Leiter Dispostion bei Elkamet

“Through the resulting measures, we increase the efficiency of our production while simultaneously reducing costs,” says Marcus Schneider, Head of Production Planning at Elkamet.

In daily operations, the new solution brings multiple improvements. “Through centralized reporting, our production staff now have access to daily analyses that allow them to assess their area at a glance,” explains Marcus Schneider. Production managers and process optimizers can also use ad-hoc analyses to gain deeper insights into potential weaknesses and the causes of disruptions. “The resulting measures continuously improve our production efficiency while reducing costs. At the same time, our customers benefit from shorter delivery times and higher product quality.”

The Elkamet team can also independently create new reports with Power BI as needed. For example, new content is currently being developed for sales, enabling more targeted and ultimately more successful sales activities. “Above all, we are pleased to have found a competent partner in ORAYLIS, who takes the time to understand our requirements and supports us in developing suitable solutions,” concludes Julia Günther.

How BD Rowa reduces the downtimes of order picking systems

Dr. Dorothee Gösswein
Project Manager, BD Rowa

Reliable customer service and continuous improvement are our top priorities. ORAYLIS quickly and efficiently managed to build a digital cloud-based platform providing us with the data from our machines in near real time while ensuring high security standards.

This solution enables our service team to immediately react to technical problems and to proactively prevent malfunctions. It helps us to reduce the downtime of our machines even further, resulting in higher availability our clients can benefit from. We are therefore glad to be able to count on the ORAYLIS team’s support in the future, turning our visions into success.

At a glance

  • Client: BD Rowa Germany GmbH
  • Sector: Industry/order picking systems for pharmaceuticals
  • Project goal: Providing real-time analyses of machine data in applications for service and customers
  • Technologies: Microsoft Azure IoT, Databricks Power BI Embedded

Becton Dickinson Rowa Germany GmbH (BD Rowa) is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of order picking systems for pharmacies, hospitals and pharmaceutical wholesalers. The complex systems of the company based in the small community of Kelberg in Rhineland-Palatinate support healthcare facilities in 53 countries to efficiently store and manage the supply of pharmaceuticals. In this context, smooth service processes are indispensable. Any downtime of the costumer’s systems would lead to bottlenecks in the supply of medicine to patients.

“Since we are a part of the health care system, our work is based on speed, efficiency and safety. This is why offering reliable customer service for our complex systems is of great importance. At the same time, we continuously strive to improve,” Dr Dorothée Gößwein, Project Manager at BD Rowa, says. “Digitalisation and the use of real-time data open up completely new opportunities for us. Just like we wanted to improve our products, we also wanted to be able to have more time for our customers, while technology takes care of the other tasks automatically.”

Agile methods guarantee reliability

The set goals were clear, but how could the plan be put into practice – especially in terms of technology? As Dr. Dorothée Gößwein explains, “For such a complex project, you need the right partner on your side. The solutions proposed by ORAYLIS immediately convinced us that they would be the best partner for us to implement this project. The team had a clear idea of what our solution should look like. At the same time, the agile working method of our partner always assured us that we were on the right track.”

Data delivered in real-time

ORAYLIS built a state-of-the-art digital platform in the Microsoft Azure Cloud. Previously, machine data was collected on hardware servers in a lengthy process and could only be processed or forwarded at fixed times. The platform now enables a centralised data collection from all customer plants and makes it available in near real time. This applies not only to basic information, error messages or temperature data that the cooling units of the plants continuously send; even extensive videos generated by cameras inside the machines are available immediately. For this purpose, highest security standards in the transfer of data were indispensable.

Avoid malfunctions before they occur

BD Rowa’s support staff can now quickly and efficiently access all of the relevant information via a user-friendly web application. “This enables us to proactively support our customers,” Dr Dorothée Gößwein says enthusiastically. A return channel in the cloud solution even makes it possible to carry out necessary work remotely. Likewise, enquiries to the hotline can be processed with the constantly updated app data without lengthy waiting periods. In addition, the database allows forecast scenarios that can be used to avoid malfunctions in the systems before they occur. “All of these new possibilities help us to further reduce the already low downtimes of our plants, so that our customers can benefit from even higher availability.”

In the future, the cloud approach in Azure will make it possible to flexibly add more and more attractive functions and digital services. For example, BD Rowa’s next step is to use its existing data for an application that allows customers to independently gain valuable insights into the performance of their machines. “Therefore we are very pleased that the ORAYLIS team will continue to support us in our future plans as a guarantee for success ,” concludes Dr Dorothée Gößwein.

Digital transformation: evm turns its data into value

Mona Meyer
Division Manager Sales Control and Sales Strategy, Energieversorgung Mittelrhein AG

Before we started working with ORAYLIS, we could only derive business value from our data at great expense. Since the data was stored in many different systems, there was a need for merging the information into one “numerical truth”.

Thanks to their structured and agile approach, the experts at ORAYLIS were able to quickly develop a Modern Data Warehouse in the cloud. We now have a uniform data basis for our business issues – a solid foundation we can build on together. Without external support, such a complex project could have never been realised successfully.

At a glance

  • Client: Energieversorgung Mittelrhein AG
  • Industry: Energy
  • Project objective: Merging the company’s data for new use cases and to create uniform KPIs
  • Technologies: Azure Data Factory, Data Lake Storage, Databricks, Power BI

Energieversorgung Mittelrhein (evm) is the largest municipal energy and service company in Rhineland-Palatinate. Approximately 1,000 employees ensure the supply of green electricity, natural gas, heat and drinking water to a total of 340,000 costumers. Naturally, a large amount of data has always been generated in the daily business – valuable information that, for example, could have been used for creating customer potentials. However, due to the inconsistency of the system at that time, this opportunity went unused: “Our data was available in different individual solutions, some of which were not directly linked,” Mona Meyer, Division Manager Sales Control and Sales Strategy at evm, says. Accordingly, employees in the specialist departments often had to create their queries manually, which cost a lot of time. Quick ad-hoc analyses were also very difficult to carry out.

Reliable decisions were difficult to make

“Above all, however, we had no uniform results and key figures due to the various individual solutions,” Mona Meyer explains. This basis did not allow for reliable decision-making, for example on the distribution of budgets or investments in business and product areas. There was an urgent need for merging the information into one ‘numerical truth’.” A task that initially seemed like an insurmountable hurdle to those responsible: “Given the high level of complexity, the number of people involved and the numerous data sources, we seriously had to ask ourselves: Can this even work?”

An agile approach reduces complexity

The problem was solved by working together with ORAYLIS. “Thanks to the structured and agile approach of our new partner, we were able to quickly get an overview of our initial situation and the next steps,” Mona Meyer says. From day one, the project management team set the right course and involved the appropriate employees in the process. The team quickly worked its way into both the complex structure of the source data and the at times complex technical content. “As the project progressed, the ORAYLIS team was keeping track of everything. Among other things, regular success check-ins and coordination led the project to success in a targeted manner.”

Modern Data Warehouse enables valid decision-making

After only a short period of time, evm had a modern Data Warehouse in the Microsoft Azure Cloud. As a “single point of truth”, the solution collects all data on one platform and finally delivers the desired, consistent key figures. On this basis, the management can now make valid decisions regarding urgent business issues. At the same time, cross-divisional analyses are considerably simplified for employees in controlling, marketing, customer service and sales.

Likewise, the manual effort for standard reports has been eliminated, as these are now provided automatically via Power BI. This saves a lot of time and resources in the process of compiling relevant information. Employees can concentrate on their core tasks. “This is only the beginning of what can and needs to be done. Both our database and our reporting system must now be developed continuously. The expandable cloud approach in Azure and the new platform offer the best conditions for this development. There is one thing that we have learned during this process: For projects like this, it is key to have an experienced partner on your side. We would have never been able to realise our visions successfully with internal resources alone. ORAYLIS provided us with excellent support,” Uwe Worch, head of IT at evm, says.

GermanPersonnel: Digital transformation with new customer services

Christian Oberstädt
Manager Data & Product Strategy, GermanPersonnel

We can now deliver far more quality candidates to our clients for their existing budgets. Thanks to the automated recommendations and success forecasts of our software, ads can be created and distributed much more precisely. And the personal advice provided by our staff has also gained considerably in quality thanks to data-driven standardisations. With this offer we have a real USP that clearly sets us apart from the competition in the e-recruiting market. ORAYLIS has triggered many innovations for us. Together, we are an outstanding team from which much more can be expected in the future.

At a glance

  • Client: GermanPersonnel e-search GmbH
  • Industry: Personnel services
  • Project objective: Establishment of a uniform database and development of innovative recruiting services
  • Technologies: Azure Data Lake, Microsoft SQL Server, Databricks, Power BI Embedded

GermanPersonnel is one of the leading providers of software and services for employee search on the internet in Germany. The company cooperates with Germany’s largest personnel service providers and job portals. With the products of the e-recruiting experts, customers can design their job advertisements and place them on job boards as well as manage applications. In this way, the company has gained special unique selling points on the market. At the same time, it was clear to those responsible that they would not be able to stand out from the growing competition in the long term with this range of services.

Potential in the data was not utilised

“In fact, until then we had only used the extensive data from the recruiting processes selectively, for example for the further development of business processes, products and algorithms for intelligent channel selection,” explains Christian Oberstädt, Manager Data & Product Strategy at GermanPersonnel. “In addition to data, our expertise and a pinch of gut feeling still flowed into our decision-making processes. There was still a lot of potential hidden there.” Therefore, a conscious decision was made to change to a data-driven company. New goals were formulated, such as automatic recommendations when creating job advertisements and predictions about the expected number of applicants. In addition, data should also be used internally by all employees, for example through comprehensive reporting.

Consistent database for reliable evaluations

In order to tackle the ambitious plans in a targeted manner, ORAYLIS was brought in as a partner and guide. An initial status quo analysis revealed that although GermanPersonnel had extensive data, it was not suitable for the desired comprehensive evaluations due to a lack of structure. Therefore, all data from the recruiting processes and other data sources were first brought together in a structured way in a Data Warehouse in the Microsoft Azure Cloud. The preparation of the data for further analysis processes is automated and updated on a daily basis. Thanks to the cloud approach, the solution can grow flexibly depending on the volume of data and the number of customers and key figures.

Michael Althaus ORAYLIS Projekt GermanPersonnel

However, innovations such as predicting clicks and applicant numbers could not have been implemented on this basis alone. “For such requirements, exact information on the entire candidate journey is needed,” explains Michael Althaus, project manager at ORAYLIS. Therefore, a special tracking tool is used. “The tool continuously collects anonymised, event-driven web data from almost 180,000 job ads, with data sovereignty remaining with GermanPersonnel.”

Customers save time and money

Christian Oberstädt, Manager Data & Product sums up the added value of the intelligent, data-based recruiting solution: “Today, we can provide our clients with significantly more high-quality candidates for their existing budgets. Thanks to the automated recommendations and success forecasts of our software, advertisements can be created much more precisely and distributed to the mass of recruiting channels. And the personal advice provided by our staff has also improved considerably thanks to data-driven standardisations.”

Finally, the daily updated statistics enable a targeted control of the ads already placed. At the same time, successes become transparent and measurable. Last but not least, the user saves a great deal of time through a clear and structured management of his job advertisements and applicants.

New service is a USP on the market

GermanPersonnel also benefits directly from the solution. “With this offer, we have a real USP that clearly sets us apart from the competition in the market for e-recruiting,” says Christian Oberstädt. In addition, the company has been able to define economically sensible packages for ad placements thanks to the new analysis options. The more valid planning basis ensures noticeable savings when purchasing traffic and clicks from the relevant job boards. Meanwhile, the fast-growing company is preventing staff shortages in-house by automating processes.

Overall, the digitalisation of all processes leads to significantly higher efficiency and more reliable decisions. Together with ORAYLIS, the company has completed the transformation to a Data Driven Company, and according to Christian Oberstädt, this development is far from complete: “ORAYLIS has triggered many innovations for us. Together, we are an outstanding team from which we can expect a lot more in the future.”

WMF upgrades commercial coffee machines with real-time services

At a glance

  • Machine data is analysed in real-time and used for innovative customer services
  • Individual apps provide massive savings in time and effort for the various target groups
  • Product manufacturer transforms into holistic solution provider

The business situation of our client

There are countless opportunities in your data to improve your business and make your customers more satisfied – not only in the form of process optimisations and better decisions. Rather, you can create completely new customer experiences with innovative products and digital business models and thereby stand out from your competitors.

Just like our client WMF – the world’s leading manufacturer of commercial coffee machines faced these challenges, among others:

  • Low growth opportunities due to market saturation.
  • Competing products of similar performance and quality
  • Costly service business with regard to required spare parts
  • Data management in heterogeneous system landscape
  • Service instructions mostly in German language

As a result, together with those responsible, we have expanded the company’s products with data-driven applications that significantly facilitate the daily work of the core target groups – specifically: facility managers, food chain managers and service technicians. WMF is thus developing more and more from a pure product manufacturer to a provider of digital services.

WMF Group: Digitale Echtzeitservices für Profi-Kaffeemaschinen

The solution for our client

In order to achieve the set goals, we have networked all active customer machines with the services of the Microsoft Azure Cloud via the Internet of Things. The central component here is a digital cloud platform. Here, the status data generated by the machines is collected, processed and made available for the various application scenarios. There is also a feedback channel through which the user can send commands to the machines.

In addition, we have connected the company network to the platform and with it other data sources, such as CRM, ERP, telemetry database and media pool. As a result, the platform also functions as a knowledge database that bundles comprehensive information and problem solutions for WMF employees and customers. In this context, existing text documents are automatically extracted and translated into different languages.

Finally, a real-time analysis of the machine data enables very different digital innovations. We provide these as user-friendly apps in a modern UX design. The applications can be seamlessly integrated into other business applications via a standardised interface, so that the user can work with them comfortably in his familiar environment. Meanwhile, WMF’s specialist departments and analysts receive interactive reports for more in-depth analyses.

How data turns into new values

As it turns out, it is not that difficult to make analogue products “intelligent” with cloud services and the Internet of Things. The resulting applications make the work of the various customer groups easier, above all through massive savings in time and effort:

Service technician

  • App provides detailed instructions for fault analysis and rectification
  • Immediate ordering of spare parts on site saves further effort

Food Chain Manager

  • Performance of branches and machines can be evaluated and controlled in real time
  • Necessary measures – for example with regard to capacity utilisation and quality – can be initiated directly
  • Example: New recipes or promotions can be sent directly to the displays of the machines in the shops

Facility Manager

  • App informs which machines in the building require action – for example, to refill coffee beans.
  • In the event of problems and defects, information is also provided for diagnosis and solution.

How innogy is preparing for the future with a digital platform

At a glance

  • Data Analytics system in the Azure cloud enables flexible growth
  • All user groups can work with data and generate new values
  • Data from SAP BW can be seamlessly integrated into analyses

The business situation of our client

In many companies, long-standing analytics systems are increasingly reaching their limits. They can no longer cope with the constantly growing number of users and data – and with them the ever increasing demands on data analysis. As a result, a great deal of potential for business remains unused.

The energy supplier innogy also found itself in this situation and turned to us for help. The company needed a future-proof platform that met the following requirements:

  • New data sources can be connected quickly and easily
  • Data can be made available to the largest possible group of users
  • Grow flexibly as new requirements arise
  • Data-driven innovations can be implemented easily
  • The efficiency of company-wide data analysis is increased

A particular challenge was to integrate an existing SAP BW on Hana into the solution. Above all, this data should later be seamlessly available across the entire system.

innogy Projektbericht ORAYLIS

The solution for our client

Due to the high demands on flexibility and future-proofing, we built innogy’s new data analytics platform in the Microsoft Azure Cloud. Our platform consists of a data warehouse with classic layer architecture as well as a Data Lake to which new data sources can be quickly connected and used by defined user groups. This means that data from SAP BW can also be accepted, processed and made available very easily.

The Microsoft services Power BI and Excel are primarily available as analysis tools. However, third-party tools can also be used if required. In this way, the needs of all user groups can be covered. It is possible to automatically provide business users with interactive standard reports as well as to give data scientists and business analysts the necessary freedom for ad-hoc analyses. Comprehensive authorisation concepts regulate access to the data.

How data turns into new value

With the new cloud platform, innogy is now optimally positioned for the future in the value-oriented use of its data:

  • The platform can grow flexibly with new requirements at any time
  • Data scientists, business analysts and specialist users can all create new value from data in equal measure
  • Data is quickly and easily available to business departments for analytical purposes
  • Staff can concentrate on the core tasks of value-oriented data analysis
  • Efficiency has increased while costs have decreased
  • The protection of sensitive data is fully ensured

Digital platform gives mobile provider a competitive edge

At a glance

  • Central, digital platform brings together all data with maximum depth of detail
  • Those responsible receive a comprehensive view of all relevant business processes
  • Various departments use data to create new value for the company, customers and employees

The business situation of our client

Like all mobile phone providers, one of our clients was struggling with massive competition and cost pressure in the industry. At the same time, the company’s extensive data hid a wide range of potentials to differentiate itself from the competition and to complete the digital transformation. However, due to a proliferation of different analytical solutions and data silos in the individual departments, these remained largely unused:

  • Fragmented data – for example on purchase history, reaction to campaigns or behaviour on the web – made an overarching view of the customer impossible.
  • Due to a lack of data quality, depth of detail and possibilities for linking, it was not possible to carry out multi-value analyses on customers, products, branches, supply chains or financial flows.
  • Due to the lack of a single point of truth, no consistent business metrics were available as a basis for key decisions.
  • Issuing different front-ends drove up operating costs.

Therefore, it was necessary to consolidate all data with maximum detail on a central, digital platform and make it available for different use cases and analyses of the individual departments. A uniform self-service solution for all areas was to support this objective. Similarly, reporting for management and operational processes had to be standardised across departments. Last but not least, real-time data was to be made usable for the business.

The solution for our client

Our client’s integrated platform is to be understood as a Modern Data Warehouse. As usual, we exclusively used Microsoft technologies. The development included the following steps:

  1. Formation of a BI Competence Centre in Controlling
  2. Data modelling: We network all data on the platform in maximum detail. The flexible data model enables rapid adaptation to market changes.
  3. Data integration: All departments and their data are integrated step by step.
  4. Near-real-time: Based on a Lambda architecture, we enable the processing of real-time data in all required processes.
  5. Self-service: Business users receive easy-to-use self-service tools (Excel, Power BI). The self-explanatory data model also allows simple data management activities.
  6. Ad-hoc analysis: Business users have the option of carrying out free analyses in the data rooms provided.
  7. Data governance: The solution is legally approved by data protection officers.

How data turns into new values

Our client now has a comprehensive view of all relevant business processes. The different departments can use all data for their respective use cases to optimise the business and create new values that benefit the company, its customers as well as its own employees:

  • Need-based customer targeting: customers are addressed with the appropriate products at the right time on the preferred channel.
  • New products: Fine segmentation enables innovative offers and quick adaptation to market trends.
  • Reliable contribution margins: Sales of contracts can already be forecast when the contract is signed.
  • Mobile sales management: Reports and dashboards can be accessed on all conceivable devices.
  • Transparent dealer management: Advertising cost subsidies, sales promotions and commissions are clearly displayed.
  • Detailed advertising success control: The success of advertising measures on the web can be evaluated in detail, right down to the contribution margin achieved per customer.
  • Fraud detection: Within a few months, irregularities were uncovered that would have caused losses in the millions.
  • Churn management: Customers who are willing to switch are identified at an early stage and addressed with individual marketing measures.
